paisleypiper's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- speak up a remote entry from the evil work box.... in one hour i have a big dialogue session to staff -- it's all about students and democracy and realizing that individuals can contribute to our democracy, that college students do not have to wait to get involved with their communities. my poetry professor told students in the class to go and tell the organizers (that would be me, turning read and looking at the spiral edge of my notebook) that the reason students are involved is that they are working so hard because there is no money for college, since Reagan. she has a point. she always has a point. that is the thing with poets. but. the students organizing this have a point, too. it is that there are people out there, students, who want to feel connected, who want to make a difference. postmodernism tells that everything is a simulation and that we are silenced by mass media. that may be true (some of these theorists don't know about d-land) but we can make an individual difference. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. - Margaret Mead so, i need to get energized for this. i'm praying that students show up because we have a famous local who is giving the opening, inspirational talk. and it would be embarrassing if he discovered how little anyone at this institution cares. we're about the image of caring, but when it comes to jumping in, we're running out the door. at least that's how i feel at the moment. well, wish me luck. soon i'll be back to updating regularly. soon, my course work will be done forever or until i begin pursuing my doctorate. 5:37 p.m. - 2003-04-22 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
